Getting to Montreal

By plane

Montreal’s passenger airport is Montreal–Trudeau International Airport (Aéroport international Montréal-Trudeau; YUL). Check COVID health restrictions for international and domestic travel. The airport is served by the 747 bus ($11 fare valid for all buses and metro for 24 consecutive hours), car rental companies, taxis (fixed $41 fare to downtown), and Uber.

By train

Montreal Central Station (Gare centrale de Montréal) serves destinations including Halifax, Ottawa, Quebec City, and Toronto with VIA Rail. Amtrak routes are currently suspended. The station is directly connected to Bonaventure metro station on the Orange line (ligne orange), where bus connections are also available. McGill metro station on the Green line (ligne verte) is accessible through RÉSO, a network of connected buildings and tunnels known as the Underground City (la ville souterraine).

By bus

Most intercity bus companies operate out of Montreal Coach Terminal (referred to exclusively as Gare d’autocars de Montréal). Greyhound destinations include Boston and New York. Orléans Express destinations include Ottawa and Quebec City. Nearby bus stops provide access to the 15 (Sainte-Catherine), 30 (St-Denis / St-Hubert), 125 (Ontario), and 747 buses. Megabus arrivals and departures are at a separate location, on the street outside Terminus Centre-ville.

Getting around Montreal

Getting to McGill’s Downtown campus

The campus is easily accessible from McGill metro station on the green line and the 15, 24 (Sherbrooke), 61 (Wellington), 107 (Verdun), 125 and 168 (Cité-du-Havre) bus lines.

Public transport in Montreal

The STM (Société de transport de Montréal) operates the bus and metro network, while commuter trains are operated by Exo (Réseau de transport métropolitain). All STM and Exo routes on the island of Montreal (zone A) use the same ticket at a fixed price ($3.50 for a single journey and discounted tickets for 2 and 10 journeys). There are also 24 hour, 3 day and 7 day tickets available, which also provide access to the 747 bus connecting to the airport (single journey tickets do not).

Most STM lines run until midnight, after which there are night buses on certain routes. Buses are identified by a number and cardinal direction. The metro operates from 5.30am to around 12.30am (depending on the line) Sunday to Friday, and to around 1am on Saturdays. Metro lines are identified by a colour (Green/verte, Orange/orange, Yellow/jaune and Blue/bleu) and the last stop in a given direction. For example, if you are travelling east on the Green line, follow signs for Honoré-Beaugrand.
